A condom protects only when it is used correctly. A few simple rules from the manufacturers' instructions.
Before use
- Check the expiry date and that the individual wrapper is intact.
- Open the wrapper with your fingers, not with teeth or scissors, so as not to damage the condom.
- Choose the right size: a condom that is too tight can break, one that is too loose can slip off.
During use
- Put the condom on before any genital contact and squeeze the air out of the tip.
- Use a lubricant if needed. Latex condoms are used with water- or silicone-based lubricants only; polyurethane condoms are compatible with oil-based ones too.
- Use a condom only once and a new one for each act of intercourse.
Storage
Keep condoms in their box in a cool, dark place, away from heat, sunlight and volatile substances such as insect repellents.
Important
Correct use of condoms is effective for contraception and reduces the risk of many sexually transmitted infections, but no method gives 100% protection. If a condom causes irritation or an allergic reaction, stop using it and consult a doctor; a latex-free model may be an option.
